Administrative/Biographical History
Illinois State Normal University (ISNU), founded in 1857, is the first public university in the state of Illinois and the first normal school in the Midwest. Many charter ISNU faculty were alumni of the Bridgewater Normal School, the first normal school in the United States. In addition to their regular teaching duties, early ISNU faculty members took on many extracurricular projects including community service, participating in campus clubs and performances and speaking at events and conferences. They would indicate their activities in schedule books as a way to keep track of their travel as well as to announce job openings, local events and occasional personal news.
