The Harlan Wesley Peithman Papers is divided into two series by type of materials. The first series contains a subseries of course materials arranged by course as well as a subseries of partial course documents. The second series contains published works by Peithman and his resources he used to construct his works.

The Harlan Wesley Peithman Papers contains course materials, research notes, publications and personal research. The majority of this collection centers around his time as a professor at Illinois State Normal University. The collection includes, tests, arranged music, concert and instructional tapes, and outlines for his courses.

Peithman, Harlan W.

Harlan Wesley Peithman was born in 1904 on a farm in the small town of Hoyleton, Illinois. In 1924 Peithman enrolled in Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Missouri. During his time at Central Wesleyan, Peithman served as a part time faculty member while working on his AB degree. In 1932, Peithman earned his BME and in 1936 he had earned a master’s degree from Northwestern University with a thesis on teaching music in rural schools. While he was at the state contest at Illinois State Normal University in 1937, he was given a contract to start teaching music at the university and at its lab school, University High School. During his teaching years at both ISNU and University High School, Peithman found time to work towards his doctorate and earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1944. One of Peithman’s favorite activities at ISNU was serving as the director of the Men’s Glee Club. Over his fifteen years as director he built the popular group from a small three member group to large ninety-two member ensemble. Throughout Peithman’s lengthy tenure at ISNU he wrote and published countless books and magazine articles dedicated to the teaching of music. Peithman directed and sponsored many music festivals, contests and concerts throughout the Midwest. In 1976, Peithman established the Peithman Music Scholarship, a fully funded scholarship for students studying music. Peithman passed away in 1993. Author: Eldon Yeakel, Nathaniel Brower
