University High School Time Capsule Collection, c. 1950-1965 | Dr. JoAnn Rayfield Archives at Illinois State University

The University High School Time Capsule includes four series within the collection. The first series includes publications from University High School students and teachers, as well as two University High School yearbooks. In the second series, included are the personal papers from University High School students and teachers. The third series consists of photographs of the school building and teachers. Located in the fourth series, are the ephemera and memorabilia from the University High School students.

The University High School Time Capsule Collection contains items held in the University High School time capsule from 1965 to 2015. Materials include publications, personal papers, photographs, and memorabilia.

Illinois State University

University High School originally opened in 1860 as the Model School in Majors Hall in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1862, the Old Main Building became the new home for the newly named University High School until 1909, with a brief period from 1895-1909 when the University High School was closed by the state of Illinois. Moulton Hall then housed University High School from 1913-1965. A new building for the school was constructed at the corner of Main and Gregory Streets in Normal, Illinois in 1965. That year, a time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the building to commemorate the opening of the new location of University High School. In 2015, to celebrate the building's 50th anniversary, the capsule was removed and opened. All contents were saved except for the original time capsule box and an unopened letter to the class of 2065; the letter and new materials were placed inside the original box and resealed behind the building's cornerstone.
