Department of Elementary Education

According to the 1931-1932 Annual Catalog, Illinois State Normal University was arranged into thirteen divisions. These divisions were responsible for the various education programs offered by the university. One of the divisions was the Division of Elementary Education which prepared future teachers for teaching in elementary schools. Students in this division attended classes covering a variety of subject matters such as agriculture, languages, health, sciences, and music. After completing two years of course work in a division, the student is given a diploma. When the second two years of the four year curriculum is completed, the student is granted a bachelor's degree. The Division of Elementary Education worked closely with the laboratory school, Metcalf Elementary, to provide teaching experience to students. In 1966, the College of Education was established and the Division of Elementary Education became the Department of Elementary Education. Today, elementary education falls under the School of Teaching and Learning. This school includes early childhood education, elementary education, and middle level education. Author: Jenna Self
