The Records of the Illinois State University Department of Foreign Languages is arranged into two series by type of material. Series I holds items such as annual reports, meeting minutes, degree proposals and a budget narrative. Series II is comprised of departmental publications including pamphlets, brochures, the newsletter entitled "The Impulse", a comprehensive history of the department from 1857 to 1957, posters and stationary examples.

Materials include correspondence, annual reports, by-laws, meeting minutes, degree proposals, and budget narratives.  The collection also holds various publications created by the department including brochures, newsletters, a written history, posters and stationary examples.

The Illinois State University Department of Foreign Languages has been active since the university's founding in 1857. The department first offered Latin as an 80 week course option for students who chose the three year path of study. The department later offered a graduate degree program in 1914. However French instruction was suspended during World War I and German instruction was suspended during both World Wars. The Foreign Languages Department later offered majors in French, German and Spanish and minors in Chinese, Italian and Japanese. The mission of the department is to create proficiency in 4 areas of foreign language: listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking. Throughout its history, the department has offered various extracurricular activities such as conversation hours and salsa nights.
