Collection Historical Note

Women's and Gender Studies at Illinois State University began in the 1970's. Unlike many programs, the Women's and Gender Studies curriculum developed from student interest and demand. A minor in Women's Studies was available in 1975 and by 1976 students could create a Women's Studies major under the university's individualized contract option. The program expanded under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Chesebro. Dr. Chesebro supported an inter-institutional master's program in Women's Studies with Illinois Wesleyan University, Western Illinois University, and the University of Illinois. By 1991, the Women's Studies minor was separated from the Ethnic and Cultural Studies program. Under the leadership of Dr. Valentine Modhadam, the Women's Studies program joined with the Department of Social Work to create the Women's Capabilities Initiative (WCI) in 2001. The program was rebranded as the Women's and Gender Studies Program in 2006. The Majority of WGS faculty belong to other departments and schools within the university.
