Collection Historical Note

The Small Business Development Center at Illinois State University began in 1984 as one of multiple satellite offices of the Small Business Development Center Program which was intended to be a chance for collaboration between universities, colleges, and business organizations and small businesses. These satellite offices were overseen by the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs. The center at ISU was created after the first year of the Small Business Development Center Program. It was one of three offices in central Illinois. The other two were located at Illinois Central College and Bradley University. The purpose of the program was to provide assistance to small business owners or potential owners. The center was intended to create a link between government resources and the private sector. The center also sponsored or promoted events that would be helpful to small business owners including speakers with topics related to small business, conferences, and small business expos. Due to budget constraints of the State of Illinois, the Small Business Development Center was closed in 2016.
