Abstract

The Sally Bulkley Pancrazio Papers collection consists of the professional and personal papers of Illinois State University College of Education dean Sally Pancrazio.  The professional materials include information about Pancrazio's education at Indiana State University, University of Illinois, and Illinois State University.  The collection also contains materials collected at Pancrazio's various places of employment including the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Board of Education, and Illinois State University.  Information about memberships to various panels, associations, and councils as well as publications are also included.  Pancrazio's personal papers include information about her political activities as well as photographs.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Series I: Professional Files, 1959-1960, 1966-1967, 1970-2001 holds information about Pancrazio's education at Indiana State University, University of Illinois, and Illinois State University.  The series also holds materials collected at Pancrazio's places of employment such as the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Board of Education, and Illinois State University.  Information, certificates, and correspondence related to Pancrazio's memberships in various councils, panels, committees, and commissions are also included.

Series II: Publications, 1966-1968, 1971-1972, 1977-1982, 1985-1988, 1991-2001 contains articles, presentations, papers, speeches, and remarks authored by Sally Pancrazio.  The series also contains publications where Pancrazio served on the editorial board.

Series III: Personal papers, 1970s, 1984, 1986 includes correspondence, articles, and newsletters relating to Pancrazio's political activities.  The series also includes photographs.  Many of the photographs are signed including a photograph of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

Collection Historical Note

Sally Bulkley was born on December 4, 1939 in Endicott, New York.  When Sally told her high school teacher she wanted to become a teacher, he told her to go to Illinois State University.  Sally graduated from Mooseheart School in 1957 and entered ISU in that September.  By taking a full load of classes in the summer, Sally was able to graduate in three years with a bachelor of Science in business education and psychology.  She taught business education at Jamaica Consolidated High School in Sidell, Illinois after graduating from ISU.  Sally received her master's degree in business education and educational psychology from Indiana State University in 1966.  She undertook other teaching opportunities while also getting her doctorate in secondary education and educational psychology at University of Illinois in 1971.  In 1972, Sally began working at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction where she was employed in the research section.  Sally joined the research and statistics section staff of the Illinois State Board of Education in 1975.  She remained at the Illinois State Board of Education until being appointed the chair of the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations at Illinois State University in 1990.  In 1993, Sally was appointed dean of the College of Education in 1993.  She remained in that position until her retirement in 2001.
