Abstract

The Records of the Illinois State University Department of History contains materials created or collected by the Department of History.  These materials include meeting minutes, committee materials, reports, enrollment data, budget requests, course materials, correspondence, directories, journals, and stationary.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Series I: Administrative Files, 1966-2001, 2003-2005 holds by-laws, policies, reports, meeting minutes, committee materials, correspondence, enrollment data, and library orders.

Series II: Business Affairs, 1966-1974, 1979-1981, 1983-2004 contains department budgets, personnel budgets, tuition waivers, grants, equipment inventories, parking information, textbook orders, mail service information, and catalogs.

Series III: Academic Affairs, 1963, 1965-2004, 2006 includes information about programs offered by the department such as class syllabi, degrees, course catalogs, capstone courses, and surveys.  The series also includes information about faculty and stuff such as non-tenure track faculty, civil service, position changes, job searches, salaries, and awards.  Finally, the series includes information about students such as recruitment, orientation, assistantships, student teaching, correspondence, and alumni.

Series IV: Events, 1967-1968, 1975-1976, 1981-2003, 2008, 2015 consists of information about events sponsored or suggested by the Department of History.  These events include award ceremonies, commencement, conferences, history day, open houses, parties, seminars, speakers, and transfer days.

Series V: Publications, 1976-1977, 1979-1984, 1986-2010 holds publications created or collected by the Department of History including journals, brochures, booklets, newsletters.

Series VI: Memorabilia and Ephemera, undated contains business cards, envelopes, signs, and stationary.

Collection Historical Note

The Social Science department at Illinois State Normal University began in 1934 when the course catalog listed William Beyer as the head of the Social Science department.  At this time, the Social Science department contained courses in Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, and Sociology.  Previous to 1934, these courses and professors were listed independently instead of as a unified department.  This became problematic as professors in the Social Science department were expected to be able to teach any of these courses despite their background.  In 1966, with the beginning of the collegiate structure which consisted of the College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Applied Science and Technology, the Social Science department was broken up into the Department of Economics, the Department of History, the Department of Political Science, and the Department of Sociology.  In 1971, the Board of Higher Education established the Master Plan-Phase III which suggested the development of a Doctor of Arts program at Illinois State University.  The history department was among the limited number of departments to offer a Doctor of Arts.  The Doctor of Arts program ultimately failed due to lack of resources and the mindset that a Doctor of Arts wasn't as prestigious as a PhD.  The program disestablished in the 1990s with the Illinois Board of Higher Education's strategic planning.  Today, the Department of History offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate courses, a graduate program, a major in history, and four history minors with eight separate specialty instruction in those minors.
