Abstract

The Records of the Illinois State University College of Arts and Sciences collection contains materials created or collected by the College of Arts and Sciences.  These materials include correspondence, reports, strategic planning documents, committee materials, budget information, program assessments, meeting minutes, event fliers, newsletters, and stationary.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Series I: Administrative Files, 1967-2014 holds strategic plans, accreditation reports, committee materials, meeting minutes, and policies.

Series II: Business Affairs, 1968-2013 contains budget reports, grants, financial aid information, inventory, technology information, and productivity data.

Series III: Academic Affairs, 1965-1973, 1976-2014 includes program proposals, assessments, and reviews, general education materials, faculty meeting minutes, salary information, job descriptions, admission materials, awards, and enrollment data.

Series IV: Events, 1968-2014 consists of information about events sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.  These events include award ceremonies, Arts and Sciences Week, commencement, conferences, Arts and Sciences lectures, seminars, and workshops.

Series V: Publications, 1967, 1977, 1982, 1984-1985, 1987-2006 holds materials created or collected by the College of Arts and Sciences such as articles, booklets, brochures, and newsletters.

Series VI: Memorabilia and Ephemera, 1989-1991 contains College of Arts and Sciences cards and stationary, Foundations of Inquiry buttons, logos, and scrapbooks.

Collection Historical Note

The College of Arts and Sciences was created in 1966 when the organizational structure of the university was reorganized into three colleges: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education, and College of Applied Sciences and Technology.  The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences encompassed the departments of biological sciences, English, foreign languages, geography, library sciences, mathematics, speech, chemistry, physics, history, economics, political science, and sociology-anthropology.  The "liberal" was dropped from the college title shortly after to ensure that the sciences would not be viewed as not liberal.  Today, the college provides education in all of the above departments and has added departments in philosophy, politics and government, psychology, and social work.  Other departments have expanded such as geography adding geology and foreign languages to include the literature and culture of other countries.  The college also offers interdisciplinary programs in Latin American and Latino/a studies and women's and gender studies.  The College of Arts and Sciences provides undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate degrees in a variety of subjects.
