Abstract

The Carl L. Wene Collection contains letters and memorabilia saved by Carl's family about his time serving in World War II.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Series I: Administration, 1940 01943, 2018, contain information relating to Carl Wene's training as a pilot during his time in the United States Navy and a timeline of his life.

Series II: Correspondence, 1940-1944, 1966, 1974, 2018, contains letters from Carl to his family and letters from the Veteran's Administration pertaining to the memorial.

Series III: Memorabilia, 1940-1946, 1970, 2018, contains photographs, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, and several military pins.

Collection Historical Note

Carl L. Wene was born August 17, 1918 in Illinois. He attended Illinois State Normal University before he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve in 1940. Wene was stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1941. Wene survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. Wene was reported as missing on January 30, 1942 when his aircraft crew did not return from a mission near Fiji. He was listed as Killed in Action in 1943, but his remains were never recovered. His name is listed on the Honolulu Memorial at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
