Abstract

The Robert Russell Hertel University Librarian (Dean) Papers holds papers pertaining to Hertel's tenure as the third University Librarian for Illinois State University. The papers include library governance documents, correspondence, articles, news clippings, appointment books, and materials related to Hertel's sudden death.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Series I: Governance, 1958-1965, contains documents related to library governance. These documents include meeting minutes from the American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, the Midwest Academic Library Conference, and other associations and councils.

Series II: Administration, 1959-1965, holds materials pertaining to library administration. This series holds primarily correspondence between Hertel and other library and university community members. Some correspondence congratulates Hertel on his appointment as the third University Librarian.

Series III: Personal, 1960-1962, 1965, includes items significant to Hertel's personal activities. Documents include a speech for his church, personal correspondence, and materials related to Hertel's death.

Series IV: Ephemera, 1965, contains ephemera related to Hertel including a name plate and a closed sign for the library used during his memorial service.

Collection Historical Note

Robert Russell Hertel was born on February 25, 1919 in Fairport, New York. In 1941, just a few months after earning his AB at SUNY Albany, Hertel enlisted in the Army and served for five years during World War II. Hertel left service as a captain and went back to SUNY Albany where he earned his BLSL in 1946 and his MA in English from UCLA in 1947. After his marriage to his wife Alta Hayes in 1949, Hertel went back to school and earned his PhD in Library Science in 1958 from the University of Illinois. Before coming to Illinois State University, Hertel served as the Assistant College Librarian at SUNY Cortland from 1947 to 1951 and as College Librarian from 1951 to 1959. Then known as Illinois State Normal University, Hertel was hired by ninth president Dr. Robert Bone to be the university's third University Librarian. During his tenure at the university, Hertel was active in local, state, and national library organizations including the American Library Association and the Illinois Library Association. Hertel also made significant contributions to Milner Library by expanding the facilities, increasing staff numbers, and growing collections. Hertel most notably helped to build the Children's Literature collection which contains a significant number of items from the personal collection of Lois Lenski. Hertel also started a Book Selection Clinic in 1962 and the Eleanor Weir Welch Lecture Series in 1963. Hertel served as the University Librarian for six years until his untimely death from a heart attack on June 7th, 1965. Hertel was survived by his wife and their three children, Christopher, Douglas, and Holly.

Series III includes papers created and used by Hertel for his outside activities. Hertel was very active in his church and served as the School Superintendent for First Methodist in Normal, Illinois. A speech given for a Layman's Day address can be found in this series as well as correspondence from Madge M. Sachs who wrote to him about music and even composed a piece for him. This series also contains information about Hertel's sudden death, a family fund subsequently set up by librarians at Milner Library, memorial speeches, and news clippings.
