Collection Historical Note

For much of the 20th century, the Women's Recreation Association (WRA) was the group responsible for organizing intramural sports at Illinois State University. The group was founded in 1920 as the Women's Athletic Association with thirteen members. By the time the association changed its name to the Women's Recreation Association in 1940, the group included over 150 members. Though the group was geared towards women's activities, the WRA organized and hosted many co-ed events. As they are quoted in the 1941 ISNU yearbook, The Index, the purpose of the WRA was "to contribute to the recreational and social life of the student body in general - not just to promote activities". The WRA also organized events for groups such as the modern dance group Orchesis, square dance club Shufflin' Shoes, and the swimming club Varunas. As the association moved into the 1970's, a national shift was taking place in women's participation in athletics. More co-ed teams were being formed and intercollegiate sports were more widely accepted on university and college campuses. Though it is unclear when the WRA was officially disbanded, official university publications stopped referencing the WRA as a student organization after 1973. By the 1973-1974 school year, Intercollegiate Athletics for Women was listed as an official student organization and assumed the WRA's athletic event organization duties.

Biographical Note

Started in 1920 as the Women's Athletic Association, the Women's Recreation Association (WRA) was the organizing group for intercollegiate sports. It is unclear if the group disbanded in 1973 but its activities were continued by Intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
