Illinois State University Department of Physical Education (1889-1973) | Dr. JoAnn Rayfield Archives at Illinois State University

Name: Illinois State University Department of Physical Education (1889-1973)

Historical Note: Though always part of the curriculum, physical education did not become a department until 1889. Because of changes in social etiquette, academic policies, and course offerings, the department has changed its name through the years: The Division of Health and Sports Education in 1931, the Division of Health and Physical Education in 1933, and the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) in 1973. The addition of the Dance program in 1976 lengthened the name to HPERD. The department closed in 2001 and its programs were distributed to other departments in the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST).
